Earthquake in Mansfield Victoria

People in Victoria and parts of southern NSW were rocked this morning with a magnitude 6 earthquake originating 10km underground near Mansfield in Victoria.

Social media has lit up with one resident in Jamieson, 31km from Mansfield stating on the VicEmergency page it was a “very scary experience, house shook from end to end, books fell from the shelves, animals terrified”.

Tremors were reported across the state of Victoria with people commenting on their experiences from Ballarat, Frankston, Horsham, Wodonga, and all the way to the Snowy Mountains in NSW and Canberra with individual reports flooding social media.

In Melbourne some buildings were evacuated with footage showing a building in Chapel Street with damage after a wall has partly collapsed.

On the Wangaratta Chronicle Facebook page, one lady described her feelings, “so scary, my windows shook and items were falling of the shelves. OMG, I was terrified”.

Mt Hotham released a statement onto their Facebook page saying, “The day started with picturesque tranquility.....followed by a statewide earthquake! We're all good up here in the hills, lifts are turning and the Spring snow glorious. Hoping everyone is safe across the state!”

Earthquakes at Geoscience Australia reports the Epicentre of the quake was south of Mansfield, Victoria.

The exact location of the Epicentre is being reported to be 125km ENE of Melbourne and 39km South of Mount Buller, with a depth of 10km.

The Longitude of the Epicentre was 146.32 and Latitude was -37.42.

New Zealand's earthquake monitor GeoNet says this was the largest on land earthquake in Australia since 1997.
