Climb Mt Kosciuszko via Charlotte Pass

At 2228m above sea level, the beauty of Mt Kosciuszko is not only that it is Australia’s highest mountain, but that it is an achievable summit for all to conquer.

You can climb Mt Kosciuszko from either Charlotte Pass or Thredbo.

The Charlotte Pass route is longer at 9km each way and offers a totally different scenery along your journey, crossing the headwaters of the Snowy River at 4.5km and passing by one of the most photographed high country huts, Seaman’s Hut.

Seaman’s Hut was built by the Seaman family as a memorial to their son W. Laurie Seaman and friend Evan Hayes, who both tragically passed away in 1928. Seaman's family built the hut to provide shelter to future users of the park and to prevent a similar tragedy.

Both the Thredbo and Charlotte Pass routes join at the Rawson Pass junction, where you will find a convenient toilet facility.

The final hike to the summit from here is 1.67km as you wind your way around the mountain to the top and take in the full gamut of 360 degree views into Victoria and the Main Range.

Park at Charlotte Pass lookout and follow the signs along the Summit Road. Depending on your fitness and how many stops you have, this is a 6-8 hour return trip. The beauty of this route is you can leave early morning and beat the crowds.

It is also possible to ride via mountain bike or E-bike to Rawson Pass, lock your bike and walk the final 1.6km. The track from Rawson Pass to the summit is accessible by foot only.

Alpine Hiking Tips
