PLANS have ramped up for an eclectic weekend of Celtic music and all things heritage, with artisan old world skills reminiscent of bygone days to be on show too.
Community volunteers interested in kindling the spirit for a new look Celtic Festival, where previous Celtic festivals have drawn more than 10,000 visitors annually to the town, are invited to the first meeting next week.
Beechworth's Lorraine Lucas said a successful mini–Celtic festival weekend held at the Hotel Nicholas last month drew many interested people to town, with plans now underway for a big event next year.
"They wanted to return to Beechworth for that type of event," she said.
"With the festival annually set in the calendar for early November, many people have traditionally visited Beechworth at that time."
Lorraine said the exciting new venture with a 'lost trades' aspect should appeal to volunteers with a range of skillsets, such as artisans who still practice old world crafts and trades as a hobby or a business that relates to Beechworth's heritage.
Beechworth's heritage dates back to the gold rush days in the mid–1850s with strong roots to Celtic history, and it is envisaged that the weekend will include First Nations people, with reflections on the significant contributions made by Chinese, English, Irish and Scottish pioneers.
The festival will also feature traditional Celtic favourites such as traditional dancing, music, poetry, workshops, storytelling, food, and pipe bands.
With tourism keeping businesses afloat and travel continuing to climb post–COVID–19 pandemic as more destinations open up, Lorraine said thinking ahead should capture tourists who flock to Australia.
The annual Lorient Celtic festival in France attracts more than 700,000 people from around the world.
"Festival goers will get a great insight into Beechworth's history as well as they can participate in the town's outdoor activities, take in scenic countryside views, and taste amazing food and award–winning wines," Lorraine said.
The meeting will be held upstairs at the Hotel Nicholas, 1a Camp Street Beechworth on Thursday, December 15 at 6.30pm.
