Elliott Way to remain closed

In another setback for motorists hoping the Elliott Way would open soon, the news is not great.

The NPWS were set to open the Elliott Way on Friday 30 September after the recent closure due to rock slides. But the recent rain of the past few days have put an end to the opening after more rocks released from the slopes above landing on the road. While the rock falls were nowhere near as large as the original land slip, you would not have wanted to be a motorist driving past as these new rocks tumbled down the slope.

In an email on Wednesday evening the NPWS advised the road would open with single lane and would be monitored regularly.

On Thursday afternoon they have had to regretfully change that decision and the Elliott Way will not open as planned.

Concrete barriers were installed on Thursday in anticipation of the road opening. As this work was completed a fresh rockfall has come down and crushed a section of the barriers. An additional two rock falls occurred at separate sites which NPWS assume were triggered by the recent rain (despite them occurring at least 12 hours after the rain had ceased).

"Further site assessment and mitigation works are required before we can be assured that the road corridor is safe for public use," said a NPWS spokesperson.

"NPWS apologise for the ongoing inconvenience and will prioritise these works to progress an opening as soon as possible."

Motorists can keep track of road closures via Live Traffic.

Other Roads To Remain Closed

NPWS also advise that unfortunately due to the current wet conditions the following roads (which typically open on the October long weekend) will remain closed at present:

•    Long Plain Road (north of Blue Waterholes Trail intersection)
•    Broken Cart Trail
•    Boundary Road
•    Goobragandara Powerline Road

The status of these roads will be updated on the NPWS Kosciuszko National Park Alerts website as things change.

Other road updates:

•    Cabramurra to Khancoban Road (KNP5/Swampy Plain Creek Road) is now open.
•    Blue Waterholes Trail (from Long Plain Road intersection to Blue Waterholes) will be closed until 15 December 2022 while upgrade works are completed.
