Heavy snowfalls result in Kosciuszko National Park early road closures

Recent snowfalls in excess of half a metre which have fallen across Kosciuszko National Park have forced the early closure of several roads and visitor areas prior to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Drivers travelling to the snow resorts from capital cities may also find snow on the roads are are urged to drive with caution.

Although providing a great early start to the snow season for ski resorts, significant snow and icy conditions have made it necessary for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to close the following key roads to ensure public safety:

  • Cabramurra to Khancoban Road (KNP 5/Swampy Plain Creek Road)
  • Kings Cross Road
  • Long Plain Road
  • Pockets Saddle Road

Additionally, other minor roads and campgrounds that are usually open until the Queen’s Birthday long weekend including those in the High Plains, Tantangara, Long Plain and Blue Water holes areas have now closed for the winter period due to the unsuitable conditions.

NPWS asks that all road closures be adhered to and that vehicles do not enter these closed areas in Kosciuszko National Park. The latest updates on Kosciuszko National Park alerts are available online.

Adventurers planning activities such as cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and backcountry skiing and snowboarding should also complete a Trip Intention Form and ensure they have suitable skills and equipment.

Visitors are reminded to always check the NPWS website for up-to-date information, alerts and closures.
