Farewell to 27 Variety

FOR 17 years, 27 Variety Store has provided Mansfield with anything and everything– from jokester birthday cards and multi-fluorescent pinwheels to 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles.

Owner Jackie Fraser fondly describes the store as “convenient bits and bobs for every occasion”.

“There’s a little something here for everyone, which is what makes the store so great,” she said.

Jackie and her husband Brendan recently decided to shut down the store, after 17 wonderful years serving the Mansfield community.

However, the meaning behind the store’s name had eluded Jackie and Brendan.

“The store was called that [27 Varieties) when we bought it and so we just decided to carry down the name,” she laughed.

“I actually have no idea why.”

A born and bred local, Jackie previously worked at Mansfield District Hospital for years and then took over Mansfield Travellers Lodge and Backpackers.

Then one day her husband saw the sign for 27 Varieties.

“He was convinced it was a great business so we decided to buy it and now the rest is history,” she said.

Jackie’s best memories of 27 Varieties were of the Mansfield community and loyal customers, who she affectionately nicknamed “the golden oldies”.

“I’ve loved getting to know everyone and looking after them,” she said.

“Over the years, I’ve also employed 14 people which has been really great.”

Jackie has also witnessed the flow of multiple different trends; however one product had remained consistently popular.

“Birthday cards,” Jackie said instantly.

“Birthday cards are without a doubt the most popular thing we sell everyday.

“I think people like that personal touch for special occasions, which we are always happy to provide.”

After the store closes, Jackie and Brendan were looking forward to resting and spending time in Queensland with their family.

The couple wanted to express their sincere gratitude to the Mansfield community for their support over the years.

“I want to say thank you to anyone who has ever come into our shop,” Jackie said.

“It’s been a wonderful 17 years.”

Mansfield’s 27 Varieties currently has a 50 to 70 per cent sale while stocks last.
