ADDING to the Mansfield streetscape, renowned contemporary artist Jimmy Dvate has immortalised local birdlife across two impressive wall murals, one on the side of The Goods and the other down Eisners Lane.
Jimmy's work combines a strong sense of design with a photo–realistic style and impressive use of colour, all of which are evident in these impressive and eye–catching pieces.
Formally trained in graphic design and visual arts at Monash University, Jimmy has exhibited nationally and internationally, with his signature large scale public murals gracing walls and silos both in Australia and overseas.
And though he doesn't have any direct connection to Mansfield, he loves the area.
"I grew up as a bit of a snowboarder and made quite a few trips up the mountain during that time," he said.
"My passion for nature is also another obvious link to the region."
Specialising in animals – larger than life murals of beloved and often endangered flora and fauna – Jimmy's work brilliantly conveys not only his dedication to his craft but also his genuine passion for these creatures and his commitment to conservation.
"I always spend a lot of time researching a region to come up with a list of relevant potential species, that are authentic and indigenous to the area," said Jimmy.
"Council provided me with a loose brief, and examples of my previous work that they believed were appropriate.
"For both walls I designed numerous concept ideas focusing on local native flora and fauna, from which the council made a shortlist and then presented that to the building or business owners who gave me feedback."
After making some small changes, the final designs were decided upon with the endangered Sooty Owl featuring on the wall of The Goods, and the more common Eastern Spinebill down Eisners Lane.
Jimmy said that the community response to his artwork has been fantastic.
"Everyone from all age groups was so supportive and positive," he said.
"We were made to feel incredibly welcome, and had many memorable conversations.
"Anything we needed was just a phone call away with Gareth and the council team solving any issues we had.
"The legends at The Goods and The Fields kept us hydrated and well–fed, and the lovely ladies from the CWA provided world–class tea and cake.
"We were pretty happy," Jimmy said.
As is council, with how well–received the murals have been by the community.
"This will not only enhance the township's character but Mansfield Shire's tourism offerings; both of which are objectives set out in our council plan," said Mayor Cr James Tehan.
With the area around The Goods and the CWA boasting some impressive colour, Eisners Lane fast becoming the precinct for street art and the Anvil Brewing Company also showcasing the work of renowned Melbourne artist Kaff–eine, the town is garnering quite the reputation for its support of the arts.
"These works will add to our existing open art spaces, including the amphitheatre, 'torso' sculpture, and interactive artwork in the shopping mall," said Gareth MacDonald, Economic Development Officer – Tourism, Events and Street Beautification.
Council was proud to facilitate this latest project with grant monies from the Outdoor Activation Fund.
Mayor Tehan said that council would like to thank the state government's Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions for the opportunity.
