Lake Jindabyne Foreshore Design

PLANS have been released for the Lake Jindabyne Foreshore design as part of the 40-year vision for the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP) master plan.

The ‘Foreshore Design’ plans show six key focus areas across the 3.3km kilometre path from Banjo Paterson Park through to the foreshore trail connection near Widows Creek.

Foreshore Trail Connection, the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club precinct, the Shared User Path, Claypits, Waterfront Park and Banjo Paterson Park. A new pathway would be three metres wide, extending to four metres in high activity areas and have an elevated section over water near the Waterfront Park.

The foreshore trail connection on the western side would allow access to the new Mountain Bike and Adventure Park on the Alpine Way.

Interested community members should view the full plans which note several points in each of the images, plus further descriptions. (see link bottom of page).

Once the plans have been adopted, they will be classed as shovel ready for future funding opportunities. Realistically, this funding could take time to secure, and the work would most likely be completed in several stages.

In the interim, Snowy Monaro Regional Council will be making repairs to the foreshore path area as there is still damage from the high water of recent years, and actual sections of the concrete path in need of repair.

With all new work keeping above full water storage capacity, a new flyover bridge will be constructed near the Waterfront Park area.

The design principles for the area state it will create presence of Monero-Ngarigo Culture, stories and values and celebrate the diverse history of all Jindabyne people, culture and heritage.

The design will take into consideration the varying lake levels, with all new work being built above the ‘lake full supply level’ to overcome any flooding issues on pathways as per recent years.

The shared path will cater to pedestrians, cyclists and other users, will have lighting along its entire length with rest nodes, wayfinding signage and cultural and educational points of interest along the path.

Lake Jindabyne and the Jindabyne Township share a rich history in its relationship with Monero-Ngarigo Country, European culture and the Snowy Mountains alpine region. The proposed Cultural and Educational Trail aims to provide an opportunity to preserve and share knowledge of the history of the local area and its people.

The Claypits with its expected design will be welcomed to improve this area.

As a key tourist destination, the following were identified as important themes to the community that could be represented as part of the Cultural and Educational Trail:

  • Monero-Ngarigo Country stories and language
  • Olympic Games and Olympian Walk of Fame
  • Ski field history and pioneers
  • Farming pioneers
  • Old Town Jindabyne
  • Snowy Hydro Scheme
  • Veterans
  • The Man from Snowy River
Images of Banjo Paterson Park including a pump track, and a regrading (raising) of the lawn area noted below.

The Banjo Paterson Park will see a major overhaul including a new pump track, the lawn area raised and regraded to negate most high-level water occasions and an extended playground area. While the actual lawn area may be reduced, it’s hardly ever used to its full capacity.

The community should feel satisfied that the overall design of the foreshore would be a huge improvement to the town of Jindabyne.

  • Time now to lobby the politicians for funding before the next state and federal elections.
