IT is far from being our best season for snow, but 2023 has certainly been a big one overall for Mt Hotham and Falls Creek alpine resorts.
After a slow snow start in June, natural and man-made falls helped kick the season into full gear in early July, and both resorts have been able to keep most of their skiable terrain open and lifts operating ever since.
As of August 20, natural snowfall totals for the season so far were 223cm at Hotham and 221cms at Falls Creek, with both resorts’ average snow depths around 60cms.
There remains an optimistic outlook for spring conditions, with the month of usually warmer weather, and corn snow, a delight for many mountain visitors.
Certainly, the ongoing upward trend of visitation this season is poised to make it second only to last year’s all-breaking record year at both resorts.
According to official entry statistics for the first 10 weeks of the season - up until August 13 - both Falls Creek and Mt Hotham are eclipsing their 10 year averages.
Mt Hotham has had 112,959 visitors, which is up 54 per cent on the decade average of 72,004.
It’s also had 283,421 visitor days, which is 53 per cent up on the 185,066 10 year average.
Falls Creek has had 107,571 visitors (up 33 per cent on 80,801 average) and 292,732 visitor days (up 40 per cent on 209,717 average).
Overall visitation to Victoria’s six alpine resorts is second only to last year.
