Thredbo To Celebrate Opening Weekend

Celebrate the opening June long weekend at the home of snow après with live entertainment, fireworks kids’ activities and winter season vibes.

Thredbo Village comes alive for another snow season with a packed village schedule, alpine gondola rides, the traditional long lunch, the blessing of the snow and more.

An institution now for over a decade is world famous master ice sculptor Kenji, who carves solid blocks of ice into wonderful creations by using chainsaws and ice chisels. Watching his skill is mesmerising and his creation often only recognisable when near finished.

All is revealed at days end much to the crowd’s delight, many of whom continually roam the village to witness Kenji’s winter magic.

Guests looking to experience the higher alpine will welcome the state of art and comfortable Merritts Gondola. Starting from the village base, the gondola travels to the Merritts area for skiing from the Cruiser chair, sight seeing and for lunch at Merritts Mountain House.

Time your gondola ride to coincide with the Merritts deck session from 1pm to 3.30pm where alpine après with DJ sets has the crowd pumping and grooving to winter tunes. Deck sessions are both Saturday and Sunday.

New this winter will be the Thredbo Alpine Coaster.

At 1.5km in length, passengers embark on their sled from the Coaster base adjacent to the bottom station of Merritts Gondola where they are transported uphill on the sled. The thrilling downhill journey starts near the Lovers Leap station on the Snowgums chair where guests begin weaving in and out of the trees to the bottom.

Passengers can control their own pace with the Alpine Coaster reaching speeds of up to 40km/h travelling along a mix of uphill and downhill tracks featuring a tunnel, bridges and circles that traverse the lower mountain at Thredbo.

Thredbo's Alpine Coaster will open for the June long weekend.

Entertainment for kids is a Thredbo speciality, and the opening weekend sees face painting, arts and crafts, s’mores and more. The Village Square is where you find all the action including Thredboland animals, who venture out for socialising visits.

Whether you have skied or just looking to celebrate another snow season start, the Alpine Bar après scene is where you want to be. Pack the puffer jacket and thermals and party under the stars and weekly Saturday night 6pm fireworks.

Fireworks light up the village and are one of Thredbo’s most revered traditions. Whether you are partying or snuggled up in your cosy lodge, be sure to find a window seat as the light show reverberates throughout the Thredbo Valley.

Every Saturday night Thredbo fireworks light up the sky at 6pm. Here guests watch from the Alpine Bar.

On Sunday the long lunch has become a staple fixture for the après set. Here diners settle in for an afternoon of fine food and beverages as they plan their winter season and reminisce about bygone years.

The annual blessing of the snow is held at the Thredbo chapel at 3pm. A long-held tradition of the Thredbo Ski Patrol, local church leaders and the community, they gather to wish everyone a safe and prosperous season and plentiful snow.

Visit the Thredbo website for full schedule of opening weekend and book early for any lift passes to save.
