Party on off the track

THE Insite Real Estate Christmas Party Races at the Wangaratta Turf Club on Saturday next week is set to be full of entertainment on the track, and off it.

While the races jump at 2pm, crowds will have plenty of other reasons to cheer, dance and entertain themselves.

Kids party entertainment will be supplied by Party Palace Yarrawonga, with a jumping castle, large jenga, knots and crosses, tug–a–war, a special visit from Santa and much more activities planned throughout the day.

Local musician Jade Gibson and band will provide the trackside entertainment at 3pm, and will be playing throughout the afternoon.

Ms Gibson said she's excited for her first Christmas themed performance of the year on what will be a busy night for the country star, going straight from the races to the Wangaratta Lions Carols by Candlelight at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

"We're going to be covering the Christmas themed carols and we're just going to keep it very much the singalong classics at the races to get everyone in a good mood and get everyone on the dancefloor," she said.

"I think it's about time since it's been a terrible few months with the weather and a terrible few years of COVID, so I think everyone deserves to let their hair down at the races."

Ms Gibson said she has fond memories of going to the races growing up, where she would often perform at the after party.

"I haven't played a show in town with my band for a couple of years now, it'll be nice to be back," she said.

"I did a gig at the Precinct a couple of weeks ago on my own but I haven't played a band gig in a couple of years in Wangaratta, so it's going to be nice to play a bigger hometown show."

Headlining the races after party from 6pm onwards will be Wangaratta based DJ Jono Leahy, or as he's better known as 'DJ Tubby'.

Originally from Albury, Mr Leahy said he's excited to finally be able to perform at the Wangaratta Turf Club for the first time since he started behind the decks in the area 20 years ago.

"I was supposed to be there on Melbourne Cup Day but that ended not in the best way," he said.

"I've had weddings nearly every weekend since September, it's been a busy wedding season heading into summer.

"(On the night) there might be a little bit of Mariah Carey, but mostly the music will be party classics, stuff that everyone will listen to and enjoy."
