Alpine Wildflowers

Kosciuszko National Park

The Alpine Wildflower season is one of the highlights of summer where colourful flowers unique to the Kosciuszko region bloom.

As the snow melts from the winter season these brightly coloured fragile flowers start their bloom, just some of the hundreds of plant species that adapt to the many different alpine microclimates.

Local guide Mike Edmondson has been exploring the mountains most of his life and always has spectacular images of the wildflowers.

There are 21 alpine plant species exclusive to the Kosciuszko National Park, and a further four species listed as threatened growing in the high alpine treeless areas above the tree line.

Spring is the start of the wildflowers season, continuing into summer and the peak of alpine wildflower season. During December and January visitors will find big fields of wildflowers blooming at once.

The majority of the flowers can all be seen from many of the alpine walking tracks including the Kosciuszko walk from both Thredbo and Charlotte Pass, the Main Range Track, Blue Lake and around the Charlotte Pass lookout area.

For those seeking guided tours of the Wildflowers, Mike Edmondson and K7 Adventures offer guided day and overnight tours.
